Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. She suffered from an anxiety disorder caused by words as a young teenager. Ford was interested in the profession of acting in her teens and joined National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of days, she concluded that this school wasn't for her. Ford reapplied for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and on her fourth application, she was finally accepted. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring for Doctor Who. Ford didn't complete her degree until 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her first appearance on TV in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate made her television debut in 1991and appeared on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. as well as London's Burning. She also worked regularly in theatres, before eventually being a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. However, Tate was soon gaining notice for her stand-up comedy, which she added to her resume in the year 1996.
